The open sourcing
of Java technology is unique because that ecosystem is the world's
largest developer ecosystem. Java software runs on more devices,
and in more applications, than Windows, Linux, and Solaris operating
systems combined.
The goal of the
Open Source Java Technology Project is to grow the Java developer
community, accelerate Java platform development, and extend the Java
platform throughout all free and open source developer communities
- stimulating innovation and creating new business opportunities.

The source code
available for download includes all of the key innovations that were
recently launched in Java SE 6 - and is released under the OSI-approved
GPL 2.0 license. Sun has also included certain exceptions that make
it easier for the open source community to participate in the community
and use the code with strong protections against patent litigation.
