Sun Brings Open Network System Design Expertise and Innovations to x64 Computing
On April 14th, Sun Microsystems announced a full range of flexible, flash-ready x64 blades, rackmount servers and workstations, Sun Network Express Module (NEM) technology and Sun Blade family enhancements all designed to work together to take full advantage of the new Intel Xeon processor 5500 series and optimized to deliver breakaway application performance, datacenter simplicity, speed and savings.
The new family of x64 blades and rack mount servers based on the Intel Xeon Processor 5500 Series feature:
- Next-generation flash storage technology to eliminate I/O bottlenecks
- Integrated networking technologies to decrease cost and complexity
- Consistent management tool (Integrated Lights Out Manager, or "ILOM") to ease manageability across the servers and blades
This means that we can deliver up to 3x the performance of the previous processor generation and with the integration of Sun's SSD and Flash in Sun servers and blades, customers can enjoy 65x faster response times and 38% less power/GB. And, in keeping with our open approach, these new systems can seamlessly integrate into existing Solaris, OpenSolaris, Windows or Linux systems, and can easily be managed by existing third-party tools.
