Sun and Fujitsu Boost SPARC Enterprise Servers with New SPARC64 Processors

On October 13, 2009 Sun and Fujitsu jointly announced new quad-core SPARC64 VII processors and other hardware enhancements for the SPARC Enterprise M-Series server line. The faster quad-core SPARC64 VII processors deliver up to 20 percent better performance. Most importantly for Sun's software partners, there is no change of code or re-certification required for this upgrade in system performance. ISV applications running on Sun M-Series servers today will continue to perform as customers upgrade existing systems or install new servers with the faster processors. Sun continues its long tradition of offering a Solaris Binary Application Compatibility Guarantee for these enhanced systems.

Sun M-Series servers with the latest processors have set three new world records on key enterprise benchmarks, including the SAP SD Standard Application benchmark, the SPEC_CPU2006 (integer and floating point throughput) benchmark, and the Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise Payroll 9.0 benchmark. These results show that the updated SPARC Enterprise servers with the Solaris operating system are ideal platforms for consolidation and for mission-critical enterprise applications including large-scale databases, BIDW, ERP and human capital management (HCM).

Originally introduced in April 2007, Sun M-Series line of servers, including the M3000, M4000, M5000, M8000 and M9000, provide customers with mainframe class RAS features and a continuing series of performance updates to tackle the largest workloads with mission-critical reliability. Sun has consistently provided enhancements as in-box upgrades - customers can mix and match new processors with existing processors all running at native speed. These upgrades can be done without downtime using dynamic configuration. This means no "fork-lift" upgrades.

Furthermore, the Sun M-Series server line continues to provide flexible virtualization solutions such as Dynamic Domains and Solaris 10 Containers at no cost to the user. These technologies enable users to consolidate workloads on M-Series servers to improve system utilization and reduce space, power and maintenance costs.

For Sun's software partners this will be a seamless enhancement for their customers' implementations running on M-Series platforms. Our joint customers will obtain better performance and value today and will be able to look forward to smooth upgrades in the future.
