Sun Introduces OpenSolaris 2008.11
On December 10th, Sun announced the immediate availability of OpenSolaris 2008.11, the latest innovations from the OpenSolaris community - THE Open Source platform for the future. Now you can Take your idea from experiment to global deployment on a single platform in a familiar environment with OpenSolaris. It's built-in features help you develop, debug and deploy new applications faster.
New Features to fuel Broader Adoption and Deployment:
OpenSolaris 2008.11 offers free, built-in features that will enable more people to develop, acquire, and deploy new applications. Among the numerous new features are:
- Back up your data automatically using ZFS automatic snapshots. And use Time Slider to browse and recover old files using a graphical interface in GNOME file manager.
- A set of new repositories has been launched giving users access to a large number of additional software packages. In addition to the main OpenSolaris repository, there are now new repositories for the OpenSolaris development builds, for community contributions of applications, and another for software that is not covered by a re-distributable license.
- The new automated installer enables you to provision the OpenSolaris 2008.11 release efficiently to any number of x86 systems using new and simplified installation tools. Some of the enhancements it offers compared to JumpStart are: minimal server setup, client setup is a thing of the past, and installation images can be decentralized.
As the OpenSolaris ecosystem grows so does your ability to reach an expanded audience - adopting the OpenSolaris OS allows you to showcase your applications to a user base that is intrinsically connected to the OpenSolaris network repositories. In addition, we're developing new programs to promote your OpenSolaris compatible applications. Find out more by sending an email to OpenSolaris-Initiative-Team@sun.com.
